Title VI of the Civil Rights Act
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in any educational programs or activities receiving federal support. For colleges, upholding Title VI is essential to fostering an equitable campus where every community member has equal access to learning and employment opportunities, resources, and growth without facing discrimination, systemic bias, or harassment. Equal Opportunity & Non-Discrimination
The University's Nondiscrimination Policy CS 07 enforces and expands upon Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The University’s CS 07 policy broadens these protections to foster an equitable campus. In addition to the protections under Title VI, this policy covers discrimination based on religion, ancestry, sex, age, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, genetic information, disability, and veteran status. These extended protections draw authority from key federal frameworks—including Title IX, Title VII, the ADA, and the Rehabilitation Act—as well as state and local civil rights laws.
The University also prohibits retaliation against any person who makes claim of discriminatory harassment or who participates in an investigation of alleged discriminatory harassment.
Who has Title VI and Equal Opportunity compliance responsibilities?
All members of the University community are responsible for adhering to the prohibitions found in the University’s Nondiscrimination Policy.
The Office of Compliance, Investigations, and Ethics is home to the University’s Title VI and equal opportunity compliance team who work closely with partners on all campuses to address allegations of discriminatory harassment.
